server hardware 64-bit mod_perl apache mysql linux

I am thinking of buying a beefier server for our Web site, but am hesitant to purchase a machine with 64-bit cpus for fear of compatibility problems. We run RH linux, mod_perl, apache2, perl 5.8 and mysql 4. We are considering a Penguin Computing Xeon or Apteron server. Are there known incompatibilities between the components we use and 64-bit hardware? Are there resources to help me allay my fears (or, conversely, to convince me to stay within the 32-bit realm)?Dear zyxtberk, From what I have read on the subject, you are best advised to stick with 32-bit software for the time being. Although there is a 64-bit version of the Linux kernel, and Red Hat does offer it in its commercial and zero-cost products, users are reporting compatibi...... - 2008-10-14

What Is VOIP, and Why Use It?

VOIP is short for Voice Over Internet Protocol and if you haven’t heard much about it you will very soon. This has become one of the most popular ways to make phone calls for people all over the world. It is type of data transfer program that allows you to use your computer to make phone calls. With a VOIP you have several options of how you want to place your call. You can plug it in like any regular type of phone. You can make a call from a personal computer to a regular phone or another VOIP phone. You can also make calls from one VOIP to another. The entire process works through a system that takes your voice and transfers it through the internet in the form of a digital signal.  Canadian satellite radio

While the United States initiated the satellite radio evolution, Canada is now hot on their trails. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) began hearings in 2004 for applicants ready to develop Canada’s first satellite radio broadcasting. The Canadian satellite radio industry received quite a lot of interest and in the end three main applications were filed: XM filed one in partnership with Canadian Satellite Radio and Sirius filed an application with Standard Broadcasting and the CBC. The third application belongs to CHUM Limited and Astral Media and to many came as a surprise. That was mostly because CHUM Limited and Astral Media came up with a different solution that that proposed by Sirius and XM Radio. ...... - 2008-10-14

Make Direct Marketing Easy on Your Wallet (and Theirs)!

The Wallet Mailer is a really interesting new attention-getting direct mail tool available Excellent for small business use, it is the size of a man's folding wallet that has pockets for imprints and accepts inserts similar to credit cards, business cards and money just like a real wallet. When loaded with four sheets the size of a dollar bill, or a single 8.5 x 11 sheet with a coupon, mailing requires only a single first-class stamp. The Wallet Mailer is the size of a postcard when folded and ready to mail. It readily lends itself to marketing pitches and direct mail ideas. Anything which involves concepts like saving money and making money seems to fit perfectly. It brings to mind tag lines like "keep more money in your wallet". It is t...... - 2008-10-14

Claiming Tax Credit on back-payment Tuition

A tax question. I graduated from college in May 2001. Due to a tuition dispute with the University, I didn't pay off the rest of my tuition (left over after loans and grants and scholarships covered the most of my tuition) until 2002. So legitimately speaking, my tuition payment should be filed under 2002 tax return (I think). However, the University refused to give me a 1098T form for 2002 claiming that I shouldn't receive one since I was not matriculated during the year 2002. How would I go about and claim my tax credit for the tuition that I paid in 2002 without a 1098T form from the University?Nelson, According to Tax Laws, reporting for these monies MUST be done for the year during which they were paid/recei...... - 2008-10-14

 insurance for uninsured driver

Where do I get the most affordable insurance for a 24 year old woman living in East Palo Alto who was ticketed with driving without insurance/licence and failed to obey a sign? I want to know the price to buy insurance for the next six months and wether it is possible for her to pay month by month. She now has a license.Hello from Google Inc., Thank you for your question. In order to answer your question, it will be necessary to provide more information about the person looking to purchase the insurance policy. Car insurance rates are highly sensitive to the individual’s profile. For this reason it is best if the individual contacts the insurance provider directly. You will need to provide: 1. Person’s f...... - 2008-10-14

Statistics about Hispanic housing, credit, buying power, population growth, etc.

I am looking for high-impact (yet extremely credible) statistics and summary information on a variety of aspects of the Hispanic* population in both the US and in Texas specifically. Authoritative, easily-recognizable sources are most desirable. Here are examples of the kinds of things I am looking for (US & Texas): - Population growth, general demographic information - Income levels (both reported and estimated unreported income) - Family size, # of wage earners, avg age of head of family - Buying power - Rate & projec...... - 2008-10-14

Married and living in different states - how to file taxes?

I lived in California all of 2004. All my income was earned in California. My wife lived in Oregon all of 2004. All her income was earned in Oregon. My income is around 3.5 times of what my wife made in 2004. We are going to file MFJ for federal. We are considering filing MJF in Oregon as well as California. I want to make sure that I do not end up paying state income tax in Oregon and that my wife does not end up paying state income tax in California. What would be the best way for me to do taxes?Hello and thank you for your question.  (pafalafa) Trophy Real Estate

Hi Pafalafa! Thanks for your help with the IPO question. I appreciate it! Separately, I have a new question. If you don't have time, let me know and I'll open it to other researchers... New York has the Empire State Building/Chrysler Building, Washington has the Watergate, Chicago has the Sears Tower/Hancock Center, San Francisco has the TransAmerica Pyramid. But what about my home state of Texas? A 5-star answer would be the five most famous (most expensive) trophy office buildings in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Total of 15 names. I don't need any info other than the names. EXAMPLE: 1 Shell Plaza Houston 2 Commerce Tower Dallas The Whole Enchilada Center San Antonio ...... - 2008-10-14

Applicable State & Federal Taxes For My Business

I have recently incorporated my software company in Washington State. I have no employees and do all of my business from my home office via the mail. What taxes is my corporation required to pay?Dear wabiz-ga, One of the benefits of Washington State is that they have no income tax. You may be responsible for a variety of other taxes, or business license registrations. You'll find all that information here: http://dor.wa.gov/content/forms/Categorical/default.aspx As to your corporate income tax for IRS purposes? If you were to decide to become an S-Corporation, your corporation would have no taxes at all. You would need to file Form 2553 to tell IRS about this decision. And, most likely, you need to do that by March 15, 2...... - 2008-10-14

 Joseph Barber - English artist

I have a pen and ink drawing that I only know was made by Joseph Barber, a Birmingham, England artist and art instructor who lived from about 1757-8 to 1811. I would like to know more about Barber and how to value the work.Hello amsterdam Almost the only information available on Joseph Barber comes from the Birmingham Art Gallery. They tell us that he was born in 1757 in Newcastle, where his father sold prints. He moved to Birmingham in the 1770s and by the mid-1780s had established himself as the city's first professional drawing teacher. His own sons, Charles and Joseph Vincent, were among those who attended his drawing classes. Other students whose names are still known today were David Cox (1783-1859), and the engraver cousin...... - 2008-10-14

 Two part question on beer

I am currently investigating the beer market, and I am very interested in finding out a couple of things: 1. Is there any company currently selling a caffeinated beer? I know that there are some "coffee" brews, but I am not interested in those. What I would like to know is if there's anyplace in the world where I may find a regular lager, but with added caffeine. This brings me to the next question: 2. Will caffeine have an undesired chemical effect on beer? Let's say that you add caffeine to the water before brewing, would this impede fermentation, accelerate it, ruin it, etc.? Let's say you add it AFTER brewing, what would happen? I know that caffeine is an alkaloid, but I don't know the side effects (if any...... - 2008-10-14

 Law Enforcement Officer Tattoo

Is is acceptable to have a tattoo on your upper forearm in the California Highway Patrol? Would it be looked down on? What is the facial hair requirment? This is just to let you - and other researchers - know, that I emailed the authorities with this question, in order to get an official answer. In the meantime, could you please say how big is the tattoo?Hello dablinkguy-ga, I have found the language for the CHP personal grooming policy, which contains specific guidelines as to what is or is not acceptable in terms of facial hair, length of hair, etc. The policy does not specifically address tattoos, although it certainly suggests that -- given the high standards of personal appearance expected of the CHP officers -- visible tatoos would...... - 2008-10-14

Louis-Ferdinand C line (French novelist): What Lawsuits (1939)?

I have obtained copies of previously unpublished letters by C line. In one, undated but evidently written in 1939, he wrote that he had been overwhelmed by lawsuits as a consequence of his last book L?Ecole des Cadavers (1938). Can anyone find out any details about the lawsuits? (I don't want a synopsis of the book!)Hi Bryan C line seems to have had a tendency to dramatise things, so I think his "overwhelmed by lawsuits" doesn't mean that there were dozens of separate legal proceedings. However, he might well have felt "overwhelmed" in the first half of 1939. Not only was there widespread passionate criticism of him and his work, especially 'Bagatelle pour les Massacres' and 'l' cole des Cadavres', ...... - 2008-10-14

 california labor law: lunch breaks

According to California state law, am I required to take a lunch break or is it simply required that I am offered one?signe, I didn't find anything definitive, so I am giving you what I found. If you are satisfied, I'll post it in the Answer area. Plus, you have not made it clear if this is something you are seeking to do (skipping lunch) and the employer is not willing, or whether you are being offered at busy times and feel you can't walk away, etc. What EXACTLY is the situation? Not knowing, here's what I found. CA is going through a change in this regard, and I think your employer is worried about getting sued, as you will see at the link below. You can only waive it in certain situations, otherwise you can su...... - 2008-10-14

Cars: KEYLESS ENTRY - 96 Nissan Altima - possible to add? Must add alarm?

We'd like to add keyless remote entry for my daugher's 96 Nissan Altima. (Bought used, still runs well, we'll probably keep for a couple of years yet.) Dealer says that some 96es weren't wired for it--and hers wasn't--and only solution is to get a whole alarm system....for about $200. Any thoughts on this, maybe a way to do so less expensively? (I doubt it, but I'm hoping.)I'm wondering if there are add-on keyless entry systems that work on various cars. And I'm wondering, separately, if there are inexpensive alarms that include keyless entry... bbbbbb-ga: Thank you for your question regarding keyless entry options for a 96 Nissan Altima.  Divorce among British Aristocracy between 1840 - 1850

Here is my question for a story I am writing. Lady Jane (daughter of an Earl) marries the Duke of ABC around the year 1839 in England. After five years of a very abusive marriage, can she divorce him? Or was this totally out of the question for that time period? I realize if she did divorce him, that she would be left penniless and totally stripped of her social status. But I need to know if, in fact, she could divorce him. If not, is she just trapped in this terrible marriage? Would there be any other way out of this marriage?Dear imawriter-ga; Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. A woman could indeed divorce her husband in England in the middle 1800?s but this was almost never heard of, and this was ...... - 2008-10-14

An Introduction To The World Of Dating For Seniors

There are two common misconceptions about dating that society has held for so many years that they have virtually merged into unwritten rules. The first is that dating is for the younger generations only, and the second is that seniors are not only too old for it but they are past it. Seniors have an unjustified reputation for being set in their ways and thus it is frowned upon for them to accept somebody new into their lives, let alone into their beds! However, the Internet and more liberal attitudes are starting to change the perspective of society as a whole. There is a long way to go until the world of senior dating is fully accepted but everyone should have the choice. The question is, to date or not to date? Seniors are renowned fo...... - 2008-10-14
